Honours at Mayo College Girls School

The Silver Jubilee Commemorative Young Thinkers Conclave, was hosted by Mayo College Girls School, Ajmer on 27th and 28th August, 2022. Thirteen students of The Indian School got the opportunity to be a part of the this. They were accompanied by their teacher, Ms Nidhi Bhardwaj

The programme had the participation of school teams from the length and breadth of the country. Some of these were the Sunbeam Schools- Lahartara, Mughalsarai, Varuna, Suncity, Bhagwanpur, Daly College, Indore, BK Birla Public School, Kalyan, BK Birla Centre of Education, Pune, Birla Vidya Mandir, Nainital, Scindia Kanya Vidyalaya, Gwalior, The Scindia School, Gwalior, Sanskar Valley School, Bhopal, Delhi Public School, Rewari, Mayoor School, Ajmer, Mayo College, Ajmer

The host school organised a range of competitions in English, Hindi and Information Technology. Below are the highlights of the events.

English Debate- Ekveer Sahoo XI A, Shamit Sharma XI C and Tanisha Mehndiratta X A, participated in the Turncoat, Extempore and Bridge rounds respectively. Ekveer Sahoo's clear thinking and articulation won him the award for Best Speaker.

English Creative Writing: This event was based on three genres:

Prose (A letter to the flying man), Poetry (Contorted City) and Haiku (A call to the sky). The limit set for the prose entry was 15 lines whereas for the poetry entry it was 8. Haiku had the standard form of 3 lines with 3-5-3 syllables. Anvika Narang XI A, Haritmaa Sharma XI D, and Jasleen Kaur of XII C participated in the Prose, Poetry and Haiku respectively. Anvika Narang secured the award for Most Experimental Writer for her creativity.

Quiz: Jasleen Kaur of XII C and Aveeral Tandon of XI B, participated in the quiz competition from our school. There were 15 participating teams in all. Both the participants performed well.

Information Technology: There were 13 teams with 2 members in each team participating in the Multimedia Video Editing Competition. The participants were to interpret the colours Blue, Red or Yellow. They were allotted one day to film raw footage on the school premises; and four hours to compile and edit the footage. Our students lent tough competition to their competitors.

English Dramatics: On an initial level, a team of three pupils were to choose 3 characters from a given table. The participants namely Haritmaa Sharma XI D, Partth Minocha XI D and Mannat Suri XII C from The Indian School chose Nelson Mandela (table A), Meghan Markle (Table B) and Chandler (3rd character). The students performed skillfully and with utmost enthusiasm.

Hindi Creative Writing: With the aspiration of honing their skills in the national language, writing participants were to self-compose poetry and if their literary artwork was selected for round 2, they were to present it on stage. Rudra Punj XI A and Manya Arora XI C, triumphed Round One comfortably.

Hindi Debate: Manya Arora XI C, Mannat Suri XII C and Rudra Punj XI A, participated as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd speaker respectively from The Indian School. The semi-finals took place in two rounds, with two teams proposing the motion, and two opposing it. All the three students demonstrated their rhetorical capabilities effectively.

Mid-Term Play: The Mid-Term Play was not a competition however, an annual eventbased on the life of Hypatia, a Greek mathematician who was brutally murdered for her 'crime' of knowing mathematics, as she was a woman! The play was curated by Mr. Parnab Mukherjee over a span of 2 days, performed by the host students. More than a play, it was an internal monologue that did not just spotlight Hypatia but several other women and historical figures, unnoticed by history.

As Mr Parnab Mukherjee aptly summarized as below.

After dying, man doesnt think; after dying, man doesnt speak; when a man doesnt think and speaks he dies!
