Interactive Session for class 7 on Design Thinking and Biodesign

An interactive and intellectually stimulating session on Design Thinking and Biodesign, was conducted on 22 January at The Indian School, for the students of class VII. The session was led by Ms Suman Aswal and aimed to introduce the young learners to innovative, empathetic and sustainable problem-solving approaches inspired by nature.

The session commenced with a clear and engaging introduction to the core principles of Design Thinking, encouraging students to think creatively, empathise with real-world problems and develop practical, user-centric solutions. Ms Aswal skilfully guided the students through the stages of the design thinking process, fostering curiosity and active participation.

A significant highlight of the session was the focus on Biodesign, where students were introduced to the concept of drawing inspiration from nature to create efficient and sustainable designs. Through well-chosen real-life examples, Ms Aswal illustrated how natural forms, systems and processes have influenced innovative solutions across various fields.

One of the most captivating segments of the session was a storytelling activity on the Japanese bullet train, whose design was inspired by the beak of the kingfisher bird. This example effectively demonstrated how observing nature can lead to solutions that reduce noise pollution and enhance efficiency. The narrative deeply engaged the students and helped them grasp the practical application of biodesign principles in modern engineering.

To reinforce learning through experience, the session also included a hands'-on group activity.  The students were divided into teams and challenged to construct the tallest self-standing tower using only newspaper. This activity promoted teamwork, creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The students participated in great enthusiasm, experimenting with various structures and design strategies. Class VII A emerged successful in building the tallest tower and was commended for their innovative approach and collaborative effort!

The session was highly interactive, informative and inspiring. It effectively nurtured creativity, curiosity and a scientific temper among students, encouraging them to view nature as a rich source of ideas for design and innovation. The session left a lasting impression, motivating students to observe, question and innovate thoughtfully in their everyday lives.
