IS LIFE A STRUGGLE FOR WOMEN, an interaction with the Chairman.

On 17 December 2013, our Chairman Mr. Prafull Goradia had an informal interaction with the students of class 11. This time he chose to ask the students if they thought that the lives of women were a struggle in our society.

The students seemed passionate about the subject! Some agreed while some others insisted that it is struggle for both men or women! They explained that women need to do the balancing act between their personal and professional lives so the pressure is high. The discussion proceeded to define the characteristics of a contemporary workaholic woman'.

The students were deeply concerned that crimes against women were increasing everyday and how it affects their abilities to freely function in the professional world. Sir also told us that in our culture of pervasive sexual harassment, a code of conduct can only prove to be effective if it is widely accepted and enforced by social institutions and not just by legal ones. He also reminded us that rural women in particular are victimized because of lack of education, awareness and support groups.

The talk took the students back to memories of the disgraceful Nirbhaya case in Delhi last year. We discussed the causes of such incidents and why it is important for everyone to be vigilant. Sir explained to us why one should be extremely careful and be able to comprehend the motive behind the various interactions with people to prevent unpleasant experiences.

Chairman sir highlighted the difference between a matriarchal and a matrilineal society. It was an eye- opener when Sir disclosed that Kerala has a matrilineal society and not a matriarchal one, as commonly perceived. Students also asked questions on the difference between women empowerment and women emancipation to which Sir effectively explained that they intrinsically mean the same, which is an increase in the status of women in economic, political, social, educational or spiritual sphere.

The interaction was a reflection upon a huge concern in our modern day societies. By discussion and debate is hoped that opinions will form which in turn will create the safeguards for our women as they vigorously manage their missions.
