Jet Toy and Skimmer Regional Olympics, classes 4 and 5.

The AWIM ( A World in Motion) and SAE ( Society of Automotive Engineers) in collaboration with Maruti Suzuki India organised the Jet Toy and Skimmer Regional Olympics on 7th November, 2015. Sixty seven teams from various schools of Delhi and NCR took part in this mega event.

Sanskriti Roy, Samarbir Singh, Jasleen Kaur and Aarush Sood of class V participated in the skimmer category while Sarvagya Puri, Soumi Lahiri, Khushleen Kaur and Samara Ravish of class VI participated in the jet toy category. A team of student volunteers from Jamia Milia Engineering College and our own science teachers trained with our students for this regional quest for 3 months preceding the event. To start with the participating students were handed a kit containing the materials for building a toy car/skimmer.

The skimmer group event entailed that contestants construct paper sailboats and test the effect of the varying shapes of the sail and its sizes, its construction style and the skimmer's performance. Friction, force, surface area and design were some of the concepts sought to be explored by the event.

The contestants in the jet toy event were required to build a balloon-powered toy car that met specific performance criteria like travel time, weight-carrying capacity and maximum speed. Jet propulsion, friction, air resistance and design were core scientific concepts challenged in this exercise.

The contesting teams had to assign an appealing name to their teams and their toys, formulate a logo, write a catchy slogan, pen the salient features of their concept toys and present their innovations.

The fabricated creations were judged on different criteria, namely, maximum speed, maximum distance, maximum time, accuracy, maximum weight-carrying capacity, aesthetics and presentation. Learning and fun went hand in hand. The day saw inspiring performances, dynamic track events, enthusiastic presentation rounds and scientific excellence in abundance.

Our School's jet toy team took the Best Aesthetic Toy prize for their own little car.

The entire experience was a spirited journey of exploration and experimentation of essential scientific concepts and skills that caught the fantasy of the students and drew them to articulate their creativities in their creations. We harbour hope this is a harbinger to a hobby first and possibly even a career option for some.
