Middle School attends the Kathakar International Storytellers Festival 2025

The air pulsed with anticipation as 25 of classes 6 to 8 of The Indian School embarked on an excursion that promised magic woven in words. The crisp, sunlit morning set the perfect stage for what lay ahead, an enchanting journey into the world of stories. And what better place than the stunning backdrop of Sunder Nursery, a haven of tranquility, to host Asia’s biggest storytelling festival—the Kathakar International Storytellers Festival, where voices from across the globe converged to cast their spell on young, eager minds!

The amphitheatre, already abuzz with the hum of excited chatter, brimmed with youthful energy as students from various schools across Delhi poured in, eager to claim their spots. Soft mattresses lined the stone steps, creating an inviting, relaxed space, ideal for immersing oneself in tales that transcend time and borders.

As the first storyteller took the stage, a hush fell over the audience. Then, like a spark igniting a fire, words filled the air—vivid, evocative and mesmerising. Master storytellers from around the world brought distinct flavours to the art of narration. Usifu Jalloh from Sierra Leone electrified the audience with his dynamic, interactive African storytelling, his vibrant voice and rhythmic gestures transforming words into living, breathing moments. Polina Tserkassova from Estonia wove an exquisite tapestry of folklore and contemporary themes, seamlessly blending the past with the present. The rich oral traditions of the Middle East came alive through Na’ama Tel Tsur from Israel, whose evocative tales carried echoes of ancient wisdom. And from India, Bharat Lal stood as a custodian of the nation’s storytelling heritage, ensuring that its rich traditions continued to inspire new generations.

Gasps of wonder, bursts of laughter and resounding applause punctuated the sessions. The audience, both young and old, sat enthralled, their minds painting landscapes of distant lands, mythical creatures, and timeless wisdom. Each performance was not just a story told but an experience lived.

As the final storyteller bowed amidst thunderous applause, it was evident that the festival had succeeded in what stories do best, bridging cultures, kindling imaginations and leaving behind echoes of wonder that would linger long after the last words had been spoken.

Eager young fans thronged around their favourite storytellers, their eyes lit up with excitement as they clamoured for autographs and photos, hoping to capture not just a memory, but a piece of the magic they had just experienced.

Heading back to School, the bus buzzed with excited chatter with students animatedly reliving the wonders they had witnessed at the festival. Tales of mesmerising performances, captivating storytellers and cultural treasures flowed freely, each recollection brimming with awe. The echoes of enchanting narratives and shared laughter lingered, ensuring that the magic of the day would stay with them long after the journey ended.
