Raksha Bandhan and Gender Sensitisation in Pre school
Gender equality and cultural celebrations form significant aspects of early childhood education. Raksha Bandhan, a traditional Indian festival celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters and offers a unique opportunity to address gender roles and equality.
Taking this thought forward, a vibrant and heartfelt assembly was showcased by the budding indianites of Pre School Delphini on 16th August, 2024. The assembly was a joyful occasion, showcasing the children's enthusiasm and creativity.
The assembly began with Aviraj Singh of PS Delphini extending a warm welcome to everyone, followed by an exuberant dance performance to the song, "It's a Beautiful Day”. The performance conveyed the children's appreciation for life and the joy of being together, setting a positive and celebratory tone for the event.
In a unique twist on the traditional celebration, the very sensitive issue of gender equality was demonstrated by a group of children (Meharjot, Shravya, Ruhansh, Mayank, Gauravi and Aarya) through a short skit illustrating that not only do girls tie rakhis to the boys, but boys also tie rakhis to the girls. The skit also showed boys tying rakhis to other boys when they don’t have a sister, and girls tying rakhis to other girls when they don’t have a brother, emphasising mutual care and respect for each other. It ended with everyone holding hands and declaring aloud, "We are all equal". This portrayal was well-received, adding a thoughtful dimension to the festivities.
The assembly concluded with a heartfelt rendition of the song "Saal Mein Ek Din Aata Hai," which speaks of the joy and happiness that special occasions like Raksha Bandhan, bring into our lives. The performance was a fitting end to the celebration, leaving everyone with a sense of joy and togetherness.
The assembly was graced by Head Teacher, Ms Vandana Tewari, who appreciated the children’s efforts to celebrate the festival in a unique way.
To make this event even more memorable, all the Pre schoolers showcased their creativity by making rakhis in their respective classrooms and tying these on the wrists of one another, regardless of gender, spreading the message of love, protection and equality
Overall, the assembly was a memorable event, reflecting the spirit of the festival while promoting valuable lessons of equality and unity.
