'RANG BHARAT KE'- WEST BENGAL- A discovery of Bengal

When young minds explore culture, history, and creativity, learning becomes a    celebration of identity and imagination.

The Indian School conducted Rang Bharat Ke, a cultural initiative aimed at celebrating the heritage of India’s diverse states. This month’s focus was West Bengal, a land renowned for its artistic brilliance, literary legacy, and vibrant traditions. With the theme “Rhythms of Bengal: A Tapestry of Art, Culture & Tradition,” students of Pre School to class XI engaged in a wide spectrum of activities that showcased the state’s cultural richness in a creative and academically enriching manner.

The Pre School and Pre Primary students lit up with vibrant colours and cultural charm as they proudly presented the “Sweet Bengal” Dress-Up Parade, celebrating the rich heritage and graceful traditions of Bengal. The learners dressed up as traditional Bengali sweets such as the Rasgulla, Sandesh, Mishti Doi, Chaanaar Jalebi, and Pithe. Using simple, child-friendly costumes and chart paper props, the children confidently introduced themselves with a line describing their sweet. This activity fostered self-expression, cultural awareness, and stage confidence among early learners.

The students of classes I and II enthusiastically participated in a Shola flower craft activity, showcasing their creativity and introducing them to the beauty of traditional craftsmanship. Using white chart paper, they crafted handcrafted Shola-inspired flowers. The activity enhanced fine motor skills, understanding of traditional crafts, and creativity while introducing the children to an important rural art form of Bengal.

With expressive voices and confident actions, the students of class III brought Rabindranath Tagore’s timeless works to life through a captivating role play, celebrating his literary legacy and ideas. They presented skits based on selected works of Rabindranath Tagore, such as Kabuliwala, The Crescent Moon, and The Post Office. This literary dramatisation helped the students to appreciate Tagore’s humanitarian values, storytelling style, and contribution to Indian literature, while building their communication and performance skills.

With curiosity as their compass and creativity as their guide, the students of class IV designed vibrant travel brochures titled “Welcome to West Bengal” inviting readers to explore the culture, heritage, and beauty of the state.

The activity introduced learners to tourism, map skills, visual design, and research, encouraging them to understand the geographical and historical significance of the state.

Bringing history to life, the students of class V explored the inspiring bond between two great minds through “The Tagore–Gandhi Friendship” highlighting the values of respect, dialogue, and mutual admiration. Using posters, drawings, and guided discussions, students examined their contributions to the freedom struggle.
The activity helped them develop historical awareness, analytical thinking, and appreciation for national leadership.

With colours, creativity, and curiosity, the students of class VI composed an inspiring collage on the Nobel laureates of Bengal, honouring minds that illuminated the world with their brilliance. The session included a classroom discussion on their achievements, emphasising Bengal’s global impact in literature, science, and social service. This activity promoted research skills, teamwork, and academic curiosity.

The students of class VII transformed the morning assembly into a vibrant music fiesta, weaving together soulful Baul music and graceful Rabindra Nritya, beautifully capturing the spiritual depth and artistic elegance of Bengal, and leaving the audience enriched and inspired.

The students of class VIII engaged in a thought-provoking discussion on the contribution of Bengal’s freedom fighters, enriched by short videos and well-researched speeches that highlighted the region’s pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle. The session encouraged active participation, deepened historical understanding, and fostered a strong sense of civic awareness, respect for national heritage, and patriotic pride among the students.

The students of class IX brought literature to life through “Living Portraits – Legends of Bengali Literature” a thoughtfully curated display of photo collages and wall exhibits celebrating Bengal’s eminent literary figures. Through engaging book reviews and insightful discussions on selected works, the students explored the depth, diversity, and enduring influence of Bengal’s rich literary heritage. The activity not only strengthened literary appreciation but also enhanced visual representation skills, critical thinking, and meaningful classroom engagement, turning the space into a vibrant gallery of words, ideas, and inspiration.

The students of class XI presented “Ray and His Magical World” a thoughtfully curated mini exhibition celebrating the extraordinary life and legacy of Satyajit Ray. Tracing his inspiring journey from Kolkata to global acclaim—including his honorary Oscar—the exhibition showcased Ray’s brilliance as a filmmaker, writer, illustrator, and music composer. Through visuals, narratives, and research-based displays, students gained an enriching insight into his multi-faceted genius and his enduring impact on world cinema and literature.

'Rang Bharat Ke' proved to be an immersive and educational celebration of West Bengal’s artistic, cultural, and intellectual legacy. The activities across grade levels were thoughtfully designed to offer age-appropriate learning experiences while nurturing creativity, cultural pride, and interdisciplinary understanding.
Through art, literature, music, performance, and research, students gained valuable insights into one of India’s most culturally vibrant states—truly reflecting the spirit of unity in diversity that The Indian School upholds.
