Recognition at MUN at St Columba's School
On 9th and 10th August 2024, students from classes X, XI, and XII of The Indian School participated in the Model United Nations (MUN) conference hosted by St. Columba’s School. This prestigious event assembled students from various schools to engage in simulations of United Nations committees, aimed at deepening their understanding of international relations, diplomacy, and the operations of the United Nations.
Approximately 400 students from diverse institutions attended the conference, where delegates assumed the roles of diplomats to deliberate and resolve significant global issues.
COMMITTEES AND AGENDAS:
The conference featured a range of committees, including:
United Nations General Assembly (UNGA): Examined the influence of inter-state military alliances in wartime scenarios
United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW): Discussed the dual pillars of women’s empowerment: political and economic aspects
United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC): Focused on the effective implementation of the Right to Privacy in the context of contemporary human rights challenges in the digital era
United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee (UNCTC): Evaluated the status of negotiations for the proposed Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism, emphasising a globally accepted definition of terrorism
NATO: Deliberated on enhancing collective defence through increased readiness, modernization of capabilities and increased investment
Janta Sansad: Addressed the issues surrounding electoral bonds and the impact of politically motivated MoPEM
International Press: Engaged in journalism, caricature, photography
The conference commenced with a keynote speech underscoring the significance of youth involvement in global affairs. It highlighted the necessity for critical thinking and introspection, which are essential for fostering a compassionate and sustainable future.
Delegates engaged in intensive debates and negotiations, demonstrating their thorough research and comprehension of international issues. The committees successfully passed several resolutions, reflecting a collaborative effort to tackle global challenges.
A social meet was organised, featuring performances by school students and providing a platform for participants to network and build confidence. This social component enhanced the overall experience and contributed to the personal and professional growth of the attendees.
