School chairman interacts with classes 8 and 9 on Democracy
On 3 February 2025, the students of classes 8 and 9 had the privilege of attending an engaging talk on Democracy, delivered by the chairman of our School, Mr Prafull Goradia. The session aimed to educate students about the core principles of democracy, its historical significance, and its importance in contemporary society.
Mr Goradia began by explaining the fundamental concept of democracy, highlighting that it is a form of government where power is vested in the people. He also took students on a historical journey, from ancient Greece to the development of modern democratic systems, mentioning key milestones such as the Magna Carta and the American Revolution. He emphasised core democratic principles like the rule of law, equality, justice, freedom of speech, and the right to participate in government through voting.
He also discussed some of the challenges faced by modern democracies, including voter apathy, the influence of money in politics, and the spread of misinformation. He explained how these issues can weaken the democratic process and undermine fair representation. Additionally, he shared global perspectives on democracy.
After the talk, students eagerly participated in an interactive session, asking thoughtful questions about how to make their voices heard in a large democracy like India, the importance of youth in democracy, and why some countries lack democratic systems. He provided insightful answers, encouraging students to engage with politics, even at a young age, and to think critically about democratic issues.
The talk concluded with an urge amongst the students to become more informed and active future citizens who can contribute positively to their communities and the democratic process. The event was both enlightening and inspiring, leaving students with a deeper understanding of democracy and its significance in shaping a fair and just society.
