Summer excursion to Ranikhet for classes 6-8

Twenty-two students of classes VI to VIII participated in an adventure sports camp at Ranikhet from May 30 to June 3, 2019. They were accompanied on the three-day camp by their teachers, Mr. Shankar and Ms. Kriti Chhabra.

The luxury coach left the School campus at 10 p.m. on May 30 for Ranikhet. The children were far too excited to sleep and welcomed the break en route for tea and refreshments! The bus continued to travel through the inky night to reach its destination on the morning of May 31 at around 10.30 a.m.

The travel party was thrilled to reach the campsite set up by the organisers, Ed Terra. The camp instructors welcomed the students with a brief introduction of the campsite and its activities.

After a hearty breakfast on arrival, the students were divided into various teams and allotted cottages. After resting for a while, the feisty students geared up for adventure activities like Zip lining and Low rope course.

Post lunch, the children engaged in fun games. These leisure activities were followed by the evening tea and snacks. At night, students showcased their talents for their schoolmates! Some sang, some others told stories and jokes etc. Everybody gathered and danced around a magnificent bonfire. Later, a sumptuous dinner was served.

On June 1, the school party set out on a short trek to explore the scenic surroundings after morning tea. The salubrious climate of Ranikhet rejuvenated everyone thoroughly. The students appreciated the beauty of the place. A couple of hours later, the young trekkers returned to the campsite for breakfast.

Thereafter, the excited adventurers engaged in one of the toughest adventure sport activities- rappelling. Many enthusiasts scaled the not-so-intimidating and yet terrifying height by overcoming fear. After a tiring and fun packed morning, the thrilled climbers welcomed the lunch break. In the afternoon, the campers were given a demonstration on improvised shelter, basic first aid and navigation. It was truly an enriching experience.

To encourage and hone scientific ability in the students, a young detective activity was planned. Through a keen engagement in this task, students developed investigation techniques, scientific temper and an understanding of team work. As a result, plenty of of creative ideas were conceived and shared. Thereafter, a delicious meal was served. Thus, comprehensive sightseeing and excursion were the main attractions of the day.

On June 2, there was an early start to the day at 6 a.m. Students quickly finished their tea and engaged in a rise and shine session. Breakfast was served at the campsite followed by a treasure hunt and a Maggi making competition. Each task opened a different layer of logic and rationality in their minds and they realised the importance of team work and survival cooking. The winners of the competitions were announced after lunch and certificates awarded.

An official closing ceremony took place where the learning from the programme was discussed.

All too soon, it was time to be homeward bound. The bus and its sombre passengers left the campsite at 4.30 p.m. stopping for dinner en-route at Kathgodam.

After a slumbering overnight journey, the happily smiling faces reached School on June 3. The parents eagerly welcomed their wards. Excited chatter filled the air as the newly returned voyagers shared their experiences with their near and dear ones.

The trip was a wholesome cocktail of energy, enthusiasm and experiential learning.
