Tailing a Tale

Story telling Workshop, Literary Week, class 5.

Storytellingis a universal and traditional art form that has featured strongly in Indian culture as an effective communication tool. It can be used to inform entertain and educate. It is often used as a medium to ingrain values, improving reading skills and opening the minds of children to worlds beyond the immediate.   A workshop for story-telling was thus organised for class 5 on 25 April, 2012 as apart of the activities of the School literary week. The coordinator of the exercise was Ms. Manisha Mendirutta from Hindustan Times. She narrated to the students the story of King Vikramaditya and his queen, Sandhya. She then asked the students to note and write down the verbs that they found in the story. It was an interactive session as Ms. Mendiratta frequently plodded her young listeners to guess what happened next in the tale. She used interesting props to encourage the attention along as she narrated with modulation. As she ended, she asked for volunteers for the best title for the story! And she was not disappointed!   Honesty as a value was tactfully introduced through the situations brought alive in the course of the narrative especially as the images offered were rich and extremely endearing. As reported by Ms. Neelima Sharma, teacher.
