The Rainbow Birds, a Latin American folk tale.

Pre-primary Annual Day, 28 September, 2013

Saturday, 28 September, 2013 was an important day for all of us in the pre- primary department. It was the occasion of the culmination, as it were, of our efforts of the months gone by. Presented in two shows, at 9 am and 11am, the children participated very enthusiastically in both the shows.

Dr. Jitendra Nagpal, accomplished counsellor and child psychiatrist, was our chief guest for the first show. He spoke briefly to emphasise the need for parents to spend time with their children." You must become little girls and boys when you are with your children. Then see how the children relate to you", he exclaimed! Also present on the occasion was Ms. Renu Sharma, Deputy Director of Education, South Zone, who spontaneously appreciated the zeal and efforts of the teachers and the children equally. Ms. Bim Bisell, an accomplished educationist in the area of pre-school also joined us to bless the occasion.

Eminent exponent of kathak, Ms. Shovana Narain was our chief guest for the second show and she was expressed her great delight with a standing ovation for the little students and their teachers. Our vice chairperson, Dr. Nayana Goradia and VP, PTA, Ms. Sangita Aswani also graced the programme.

The shows began with a welcome by our Head Teacher, Ms. Vinita Roy. Principal, Ms. Tania Joshi also shared her thoughts on how theme and spiral learning, of which this show was the culmination, was an invaluable element of our School's philosophy. , And then it was the turn of our tiny tots to showcase their musical, something that everyone was eagerly awaiting. Composed, written, designed, and mounted entirely by our teachers, the children presented a well known Latin American folk tale, The Rainbow Birds, based on the age-old adage of good begets good. It is the story of birds who are plain black and white who yearn for some of the vibrant and beautiful colours of the rainbow that they see every day. Then cones a day, when the rainbow starts to get eaten by beetles and is in danger of disappearing. To save their beloved rainbow the black and white birds take the help of their fellow- bird, the Phoenix to outdo the beetles. The rainbow is thus saved after a fearsome battle between the beetles and the birds.

For their good deed of saving the rainbow, the Phoenix grants the plain birds, the vibrant and beautiful colours of the rainbow!

A pageant of colour, beat and melody, the children carried the occasion splendidly. Each one moved in poise and perfection. They appeared to enjoy their performance which was the real key to the successful learning experience it had been.

As told by Ms. Priya Kulkarni.
