A webinar co-hosted by Ms Vrinda Tandon and Ms Parneet Shergill was organised for the students of classes XI and XII on 30 June 2020. The purpose of the session was to inform the students about Liberal Education in India and the innovative pedagogy followed by Ashoka University.
Ms Parneet Shergill, post graduate in Clothing and Textiles from SNDT University, Mumbai has worked as a part time lecturer at various fashion institutes and Home Science colleges and is currently serving as Assistant Director of the Outreach team of Ashoka University for the last four years. Her experience of over 15 years in the field of teaching and counselling has taken her across the country helping her understand the finer nuances of the culture of various regions.
Ms Tandon holds an honours degree in French from Delhi University and has done her MBA in International Business from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. A fellow of Anant National University, Ahmedabad, she has been a part of an academic initiative called KHEL that studies the effects of the environment on the behaviour of students.
The students were engaged in an interactive talk with Ms Shergill as she proceeded to explain the term Liberal Education and its relevance in the todays times. She talked about the unique features of Ashoka University and discussed the various courses that are available there. She talked about the foundation courses, Majors, Minors and Co-Curriculars as options available to students. She also discussed how students can convert a major course into an advanced major course after completing the required number of semesters. Apart from that, it was also mentioned that the University offers various additional PG diploma courses.
Ms Vrinda Tandon informed the students about the undergraduate programmes, eligibility criteria for different courses offered at Ashoka University, the interview process, semester-abroad programmes and the fee structure for the various courses.
Anushka Jain, a student pursuing Psychology at the university, spoke extensively about campus life and the various workshops, clubs, societies and exchange programmes offered at the university. She shared how her association with the college helped her transform into a confident adult. She also talked about how peer learning had proven helpful during her stay there.
This session proved to be very beneficial for the students as they comprehended the utility and horizons of a liberal arts education. It gave them new perspective to look beyond the conventional courses.
