Workshop on Teaching Mathematics at the Elementary Level
Ms. Jagrati Kapoor and Ms. Mehak Gumber from our School attended a one-day workshop on Teaching of Mathematics at Elementary Level at the Apeejay School, Saket on 31st July, 2015. The workshop was conducted by two eminent educationists, Dr. A. K. Rajput and Prof.Dr. Dharam Prakash. It was an interactive workshop which highlighted the importance of activities and the involvement of students in class while learning math.
The main goal of the workshop was to acquaint teachers on how to 'mathematise' a childs thinking. It also sought to provide teachers with the knowledge of how mathematical thinking is developed in a child from birth itself. The importance of logical thinking and reasoning was deliberated upon, to empower the child to be able to draw his own conclusions and algorithms.
Various games and activities relating to mathematical concepts like Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Factors and Multiples, Symmetry, Fractions and Integers were discussed to grease the wheels of learning, as it were, among students. The workshop emphasised the importance of introducing Pre Number Skills before the teaching of basic numbers and counting in class I. The teachers were also acquainted with the different levels of development of Geometric Thinking in a child.
The resource people conducting the workshop asserted that the main aim of teachers should be to develop the inner resources of growing learners and empower them with different perspectives of looking at the diverse concepts. The speakers emphasised the ELPS way of learning ( E experience, L- learning, P- pictures and S- symbols).
In the end, teachers were left with the thought that they must use real experiences and examples to convey mathematical concepts to children.
