World Environment Day activities across the classes

World Environment Day is observed on June 5 around the globe. First held in 1974, this day emphasises the need to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the environment. On this day, governments, businesses, celebrities and citizens focus on environmental issues and their probable solutions. The day is hosted every year by a different country. And this year, it is being hosted by Columbia in partnership with Germany.

The theme for Environment Day 2020 is biodiversity- a call to action to stop the loss of species and degradation of the natural world, both of which are accelerating. It is centred on "The foods we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the climate that makes our planet habitable all come from nature".

Currently, as many as one million plant and animal species risk extinction because of human activities. The decisions on the environment taken by the present generation will impact the world inherited by the future generation.

The Indian School student community organised a plethora of virtual activities to observe the green day. The initiative was aimed at highlighting the role young people play in preventing the loss of biodiversity and preserving nature for a cleaner and greener future.

In the face of a soaring pandemic, it is crucial for mankind to realise the importance of preserving nature. "It's time to wake up. To take notice. To raise our voice. It's time to build back better for People and Planet. This World Environment Day, it's Time for Nature.

The Indianite green warriors , in a show of solidarity with the inspiring environmentalists, have made colourful and thought-provoking contributions to the global movement. They have created an array of colourful posters, shot inspiring short films, made power-point presentations, taken a pledge, planted saplings at home, etc. to create awareness of the need to slow down and let nature breathe.

The attractive posters aim at sensitising people about environmental issues and the dire need to save this magnificent planet. The animated PowerPoint presentations focus on the positive impact of the COVID -19 lockdown on the environment. These movies and PPTs reveal the state of the planet as an ailing patient with toxic air, rising temperatures and rampant environmental degradation.

Ironically the lockdown has resulted in a healing touch for this patient. The ailing planet has been able to restore to health its sick and dying spaces. Air pollution levels have dropped drastically, river bodies are cleaner, animals have started to move about freely, plant life is thriving and the sky is blue.

Buoyed by the sight of a resurgent environment, many students have pledged to do their Bit to save it and to create awareness on the need to adopt eco -friendly practices. They have connected over the virtual platform with members of their communities and motivated them to similarly pledge towards creating a better environment for all.
